An abrupt shift in a fluid's velocity inside a network of pipes can cause the overpressure phenomenon known as "water hammer." It happens, for instance, when a pump is turned off or when a valve or tap is abruptly closed. A water hammer is noise that is heard when you turn off a faucet or hear a loud thud when your washing machine concludes its filling cycle. When you close a tap, the inertia of the water also suddenly stops, and as a result, a high pressure is produced. This pressure creates vibrations, and as a result, you hear the sound that sounds like an actual hammer. Not only is a water hammer annoying, but a lot of components of your fixtures, including pipes, joints, connections, and fittings, may get damaged as a result of it. You can have expensive repairs or water leaks if it goes on for too long. If you think you’re experiencing water hammer, you can always contact professionals for plumbing services.

Loose Pipes

One of the reasons behind the water hammer is pipes that are improperly fastened or competitively loosened. When this is the case, the crashing of the pipes with the waves becomes stronger, and as a result, this phonomenon occurs. Remember that pipes should be firmly fastened in order to prevent early degradation.

Rusted Stop Valves

When stop valves are worn loose, it can also result in a water hammer. When a water hammer occurs, most of the time, the valves are open, and due to this, with the intensity of the shockwaves the hammer sends, it can knock the valve handle and valve jumper.

Trapped Air

If the empty pipes are filled too quickly, this can also create a water hammer because of the trapped air. Make sure the pipework is filled slowly to allow air to escape in order to reduce the chance of air building up within the system.

Prevention

Water hammer prevention can be achieved in a number of ways. The first thing to do is to check your home's water pressure levels, as high water pressure is typically the source of water hammer. If the pressure is above 80 psi, installing a pressure regulator is a good idea. This will maintain an appropriate and consistent water pressure at the outflow and, as a result, keep pipes and domestic appliances like dishwashers and washing machines from wearing out.  Another installment that can help is a check valve that you can install in any fixture you want. They allow flow in a single direction since they are unidirectional, and when the liquid direction changes, the valve shuts off to prevent water hammer damage to the pipeline network, which includes pumps and valves.
